Salt Bath Nitrocarburizing

KC Jones’ Salt Bath Nitrocarburizing (SBN™) system is among the most advanced in the world, and has acquired all the work from the Nitromet processing division of Kolene Corporation.

Salt Bath Nitrocarburizing dramatically enhances corrosion resistance and engineering properties of ferrous metals. SBN treatment is the ultimate in corrosion prevention: it is superior to chrome and electroless nickel plating.

The multistage, turnkey process produces parts with surface hardness increased to Rockwell 56 C minimum, while bending fatigue and rotary bend strength more than double. The process eliminates galling associated with plated surfaces and substantially enhances wear characteristics and surface lubricity. Costs plunge versus conventional plating processes, and so do part rejects.

Preprocess Machining

A unique pre-cleaning operation removes all organic and inorganic materials in minutes, allowing finished machining of parts prior to SBN treatment. Other special features include a mechanical pumping system in every tank to ensure uniform compound zones and clean part surfaces.

Toughening Ferrous Metals of All Sizes and Shapes

SBN (also known as ferritic nitrocarburizing) is a thermochemical diffusion process that simultaneously introduces a compound layer of carbon and nitrogen into the surface of ferrous metal parts. The result: two distinct microstructural zones with a combined depth of .015 to .30 inches, depending on the substrate and processing time in the salt bath. On the surface is a thin, hard, ductile casing of epsilon iron nitride overlaying a much deeper nitrogen-rich diffusion zone.

SBN treats most ferrous metals, including low and medium carbon steel, powder metals, austenitic steels, tool and die steels, cast, gray and nodular iron, and a broad range of alloy steels. Parts of all sizes and shapes – everything from pins to cylinder blocks – emerge with a lustrous black finish, ready to thrive in high-wear and corrosive environments.
